Sometimes Your Passion Can’t Be Monetized

Hi there,

I hope you stick around and read this entire post because it’s an important one!

Not long ago, I was listening to a recording of an affiliate marketing coach, and a student asked him this question: “What is a common mistake beginners make when choosing their first niche?”

The coach responded without hesitation, “Beginners choose a niche related to their passion. They don’t check to make sure it is a niche that has demand.”

In other words, what he was saying is that beginner affiliate marketers are choosing niches where the market doesn’t have a strong need, meaning not enough people are spending money on these products.

As a beginner, you must do your due diligence and first determine if your passion has a strong demand.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with choosing a niche related to your passion, so you can enjoy creating content and promoting products you’re passionate about. However, if it doesn’t have demand, then what’s the use? At that point, you can do it as a hobby and not as a business.

Just Do A Quick Search To Find Out

Before creating this post, I did some quick research about the following:

A niche in self-improvement can be deceptive. There’s a large audience for it, but there’s little demand for affiliates. The original creators of these products are the ones who receive the majority of the profits, not the affiliate marketers.

So that’s one example of a not-so-good niche.

There might be exceptions depending on the product. I’ve seen a digital horoscope product on Clickbank that seems very popular for affiliates to promote (if you’re into that type of self-improvement).

But my point is to do your research so you can be on the lookout for bad choices.

Now, the other side of the coin, here’s an example of a good niche to choose for an affiliate marketer:

Pet supplies for either dogs or cats.

Hey, pet owners often buy food and supplies for their pets more than they do for themselves!

So, make sure to choose something with strong demand above all else. If it’s related to something you love, that’s a plus, but it shouldn’t dictate your choice.

Don’t Be Afraid to Let Go!

If you choose something that you thought was a good idea at the time, but later realize it’s not, don’t be afraid to let it go.

In the past, I made the mistake of holding on to my first choice, which cost me significant time and money due to my stubbornness. That doesn’t have to be you!

That also doesn’t mean keep switching niches erratically. There’s a fine line here!

The Affiliate Marketing Niche

I’ll tell you a little something about my story. I started affiliate marketing quite a while ago, and I believe I got off to a bad start because I learned a strategy that never worked for me for various reasons. However, I’ve learned a lot in the process.

Years later, I’ve tried a different strategy, which involves building an email list.

I’ve been through the ups and downs (mostly downs), but I continue to learn a lot, especially in the down moments of my journey.

When I started building my email list, I chose the affiliate marketing niche.

To me, promoting this niche felt strange. I’m not sure why, perhaps because I felt insecure, and I also felt like I didn’t know enough about affiliate marketing. I didn’t see myself as a professional.

My Passion Did Not Become Part of My Plan

I thought about changing my niche. I thought I might be able to break into the photography niche because I enjoy taking pictures. I’m not sure if it’s my passion, but I do love taking photos of random things and the city’s skyline, and so on.

I also considered doing the travel niche. Travel is definitely my passion, although I haven’t had the opportunity to do it as often as I would like. So, I thought that maybe if I get into this travel niche, I’ll have a good excuse to travel more often and document my experiences for content.

Hey, maybe I could start traveling to places near me and eventually venture to more distant locations.

Or even do both at the same time. Travel and take beautiful pictures throughout my travels, and promote travel gear, cameras, etc.

Well, none of those ideas came true!

I Do Know Affiliate Marketing Enough

After giving it some thought, I decided to forget about my passion and focus on something I learned a lot about in the last few years.

And that is the affiliate marketing niche.

I do think I know more about affiliate marketing than I give myself credit for.

So, I decided to stick to the affiliate marketing niche for beginners because I’ve already been through so much that I think I can provide valuable information that a complete beginner might benefit from.

Choose a Niche You Know About

Is there something you already know a lot about? Choosing a niche you know a lot about can be beneficial because you’ll have a lot to say, which means you won’t run out of ideas for content.

As long as the niche has demand, go for something you have experience in. In my opinion, that’s the best type of niche to choose from because you’ll have a lot to say about the subject.

You’ll have plenty of value to offer to your audience, and as a result, they will see you as an authority they can trust.

I’ll Go Back to My Passion

If the opportunity ever comes up, I can always go back and try a different niche, maybe even one I’m passionate about. But if that doesn’t happen, why not use the income I earn to live my passion instead?

If your passion is a bit unusual and doesn’t have much monetization potential, then start with a niche that has higher demand. Use that income to support your passion as a hobby.

At the end of the day, affiliate marketing is about generating income, and that income can help you build the life you want.
