3_Identify Your Target Audience & Improve Your Email Open Rate

Hello!

In this post, I would like to talk about autoresponder emails and how you can make them more compelling so more people read them.

Autoresponders are written in advance and sent to subscribers automatically at specific intervals according to my specifications. They are triggered and sent automatically after someone subscribes to my email list through the opt-in page.

The following is the route the general public takes to reach my email list and potentially purchase my offer.

  1. Traffic
  2. Opt-in page
  3. Confirmation page
  4. Bridge page
  5. Lead magnet
  6. Autoresponder emails
  7. Broadcast emails

LOOKING BACK AT MY FIRST AUTORESPONDER

Back when I started this journey of building my email list, I remember creating 12 email autoresponders.

The first (welcome) email included a link to the bridge page, where the recipient could download the free lead magnet report.

The second email was a personal introduction of me and who I am.

The third email, through the last, provided basic information on affiliate marketing, covering everything I had learned up to that point.

Were they well-crafted emails? Looking back, I don’t think they were.

On top of that, as I said in my first post, I wasn’t particularly excited about the product I was promoting. I was hoping for a much better product, and I think I was transmitting that lack of interest in my writing.

Over the past two years, I have changed my 12-email autoresponder sequence several times, and now I have only 6.

IT’S 20%, A GOOD NUMBER?

There’s a percentage number called open rate. This number shows the percentage of people on my entire list who opened my emails.

Back when I started, I assumed a good percentage rate would be at least 80%.

Well…

I was wrong because 80% would be like  “miracle”, especially in the wealth or make-money-online niche.

I learned that a 20% open rate is the norm and considered good.

This autoresponder phase is when people may be starting to get to know you, so they are low-engaged subscribers. Many of them subscribed primarily for the free lead magnet report; that’s it.

No hard feelings, it’s all part of the process.

The first email in an autoresponder sequence (my welcome email) typically has the highest open rate because it’s the email my subscribers were instructed to open to receive their free lead magnet report.

You will also notice a 21.38% click rate, indicating that many people clicked the link in the email to download their free lead magnet report.

As you might have noticed, the first few emails generally have a higher open rate, and as the emails progress, the open rate declines slightly.

The very last email, which is my 6th email, is the one with the link to the product offer: Internet Profits Academy.

ARE YOUR EMAILS ENGAGING ENOUGH?

As I said earlier, a 20% open rate is a good number in the wealth/make-money-online niche, which is what I have in the beginning, but my open rates decline as the emails progress. So how can I improve them?

First, the subject line plays a big role; you need to come up with something curious or something slightly mysterious so people are intrigued to open your emails.

Second, you have to develop the skill of crafting well-written emails that create engagement.

My current autoresponder sequence has 6 emails, which I have to admit are fairly generic, which is probably why people lose interest by the time they reach the last email in the sequence.

YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY YOUR AUDIENCE!

What can you and I do to make our emails more engaging?

One of the things I recently prioritized learning more deeply is identifying my target audience.

  1. Who are the type of people my product can help? Who am I serving?
  2. What specific problems do these people have that the product I’m offering can help them solve?

These are the questions we need to research to make our message clearer and more emotionally engaging with our audience. You need to connect!

THIS IS WHAT YOU ULTIMATELY HAVE TO BE GOOD AT

Identifying your audience is something I learned before, but for whatever reason, I never gave it the importance it required. It went over my head.

But I’m here to tell you, coming from someone who has heard a lot of tips, tricks, tactics, technicalities, and general information about affiliate marketing, that this is the core skill you must prioritize above all. This is it!

Clearly identify the target audience you will market to.

This is the skill that probably most affiliate marketers fail to become good at, which is why most quit.

You need to answer those two questions based on the niche and product you’re promoting, and start writing your emails or content with those answers in mind.

PRACTICE MAKES IMPROVEMENT

You will need practice!

At first, your writing may not sound fluent. Your message might sound like you are trying too hard to sell them something, or it might sound unnatural, and so on.

You just need to practice and keep improving, as you noticed your flaws along the way. Unsubscribers will pop up, and that’s ok!

That’s what I’m going to do as well: find answers to those questions and craft my emails and content so my message connects more deeply with my audience.

I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH DESIRES

When I come across an ad or read some type of content information, in the back of my mind, I go, “What’s in it for me?” “How can this information benefit me?” and “Am I emotionally connecting with this message and with the person who wrote it?”

So if those are the things that go through my mind, I’m sure it’s very similar or the same for others.

When others read my content, similar thoughts will run through their heads.

CONCLUSION

I know there’s more to learn about this subject, and as I continue to learn, I will continue to share it with you on my blog. But for now, start with those two simple questions.

  1. Who are the type of people my product can help? Who am I serving?
  2. What specific problems or frustrations do these people have that the product I’m offering can help them solve?
